Goships.com Survey #1

Dear Ship Enterprise Stakeholder: Your feedback is requested to help evaluate the www.goships.com information web portal.

The GoShips.com website was launched in 2007 as an industry image and information portal for ship enterprise careers (plan, design, build, outfit, operate, maintain, repair, dispose). The target audience was job seekers, job changers, employers, current employees, educators & career counselors.  Now absent of a funding source, it’s time to determine if GoShips can be sustained by industry stakeholders.  Through an National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) Crosscut Initiatives Panel project, this question will be determined over the next year by conducting market research, exploring technical, legal and financial issues, and developing a business feasibility plan.

Since 2007 there have been few updates although some functional improvement, some additional ‘my story’ video interviews, and two NSRP Crosscut Panel Projects, and instructional design workshop, and a supervisory training course have been added.

Consider that our industry is spread geographically along all coasts, most navigable rivers and some inland. We have multiple trade and professional or technical associations, we have federal and state governments, commercial and export customers. Some of our business is going up, some is flat, some is in decline. Our industry image – in eyes of the public in general and government is somewhat unknown because the industry is small compared to automotive, aerospace, construction, etc.

Presuming we retain and improve this web portal, what’s in it for you? Here are some ideas, you may have more.
- Recruiting production and professional staff
- Showcasing the industry as a safe and reliable place to work
- Educating key stakeholders and policy makers about the industry and the career paths it offers
- Collaborating with local and regional educators
- Spotlighting industry events
- Providing exposure for and linkages to your organization as part of the shipbuilding and repair enterprise
- Educating target audiences about the history of shipbuilding and the ship life cycle
- Capitalizing on social networking to increase awareness
- Other enterprise collaboration and information sharing
